Ball-retained dentures are so named because of the ball and socket mechanism used. The dentist places small steel balls atop the implants. Sockets are also fitted. These sockets snap in place to help support the denture.
Bar-retained dentures use three or more dental implants which are surgically inserted into the gums. A thin metal bar runs along the implants. This bar keeps the dentures in place while the implants act as anchors for a lasting, reliable fit.
Both bar-retained and ball-retained dentures offer a stronger hold than traditional, removable dentures. They also offer greater comfort by avoiding the rubbing and slipping ill-fitted dentures can cause.
