Implants are fused directly to the jawbone to replace the roots of missing teeth. This allows implants to act as a permanent solution, as well as protect the gums and jawbone in much the same way as natural teeth. However, patients require a healthy jawbone for successful placement. Patients should also have good oral hygiene and avoid smoking.
During your initial consultation, we can conduct an oral examination to determine whether implants are a good solution for your missing tooth or teeth.
Implant Placement
Once we confirm that your oral health allows for dental implant placement, we place the implants in three steps.
First, a local anesthetic is used to eliminate pain during the placement procedures. Sedation dentistry is also available. A hole is drilled into the jawbone and a titanium implant screwed into place. For the next several weeks, the implant is left to heal. During this time, the implant fuses to the jawbone. This process is known as osseo-integration and provides implants with a sturdy, lasting foundation for supporting the artificial tooth and assisting in chewing, speaking, and smiling.
During the second step, the dentist adds a post to the implant to complete the foundation for your new replacement tooth.
Once the gum tissue heals, the final step begins. A dental crown is placed on top of the post. The post and implant provide a secure anchor for your replacement tooth so that with proper care and treatment, your new smile can last a lifetime.
